Life Transition • Stress • Adjustment • Anxiety • Depression Everyone goes through difficult transitions in life: relationship breakups, career changes, children leaving home, retirement, or relocation, to name just a few. Changes like these can create enormous stress, leading to adjustment difficulties, anxiety, and even depression. In fact, the greatest percentage of individuals seeking counseling at VCS are for these very issues. Oftentimes, a brief period of professional counseling is all that is necessary to ease the development of emotional distress during these periods of transition.
Trauma • Abuse Survivors • Post Traumatic Stress Trauma can happen anytime, anywhere, to anyone. Whether a disaster wreaked by nature, or an act of man, a trauma can leave you feeling frightened, confused, angry, and uncertain. Whether the incident lasted only a moment or continued over a period of years, its effects can be devastating. There are many victims and a wide variety of trauma -- abuse, assault, disasters, domestic violence, vehicle accidents, sudden devastating illness, and the injury or death of a loved one. Village Counseling Services offers professionally trained counseling with victims of trauma including the use of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) -- a well-researched treatment method that often brings rapid improvement in symptoms. For further information about EMDR, see http://www.emdr.com/briefdes.htm.
Bereavement • Loss • Grief Losing a loved one can turn your world upside down and the reality of your loss may sometimes feel unbearable. When sadness and loneliness become overwhelming, working through your grief with a professional counselor can help return you to healthy functioning. Village Counseling Services would like to assist you through your time of grief.
Health Concerns • Chronic and Terminal Illness The diagnosis of a serious physical illness, such as cancer, or a chronic medical disorder, such as diabetes, can be devastating to the patient and his or her family members. Once a family adjusts to the initial shock of diagnosis, it may discover that the day-to-day reality of coping with the illness is overwhelming and emotionally draining. Counseling can help families develop coping skills and work through the emotional adjustments necessary to improving the quality of family life for everyone. VCS offers a licensed professional counselor with a specialty in health psychology. |
